As well as being a registered psychologist, I am a qualified Junior Primary teacher with 6 years of experience in teaching young children. In 1989, I returned to university to embark on an Honours degree in Psychology and then two years later qualified with a Masters degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Cape Town. I have been in private practice since 1992.

Since then I have obtained a certified qualification in Focussing Orientated Psychotherapy from the Institute of Focusing Psychotherapy in New York. This form of therapy can be applied to adults and children. I have had many years of on-going supervision and training in both child and adult psychotherapy and recently have received training in Mentalization Based Therapy from experts in the field including Professors Peter Fonagy and Anthony Bateman from the University College London at the Anna Freud Centre in London.

My basic orientation is Psychoanalytic Self Psychology but I also believe in holding theory lightly and using elements from other orientations which I think may be useful for a particular client. I have always been interested in developmental psychology and the fact that many of the issues that we deal with as adults have their roots in our early development.  I am a founding member of the Cape Town Psychoanalytic Child Group, and belong to the Cape Town Psychoanalytic Self Psychology Group.

I am myself a mother who, when my child was a young baby, had my fair share of anxiety!

I enjoy working with adults and I find babies and toddlers endlessly fascinating.

I  have been involved in research on Mentalization Based Psychotherapy.  I have received training in the Parent Developmental Interview (PDI) and the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI)  from the Anna Freud Institute in London.  I am a certified PDI and AAI  coder and often use these interviews clinically to deepen my understanding of the parent/infant relationship. I also code scripts of PDI interviews  and AAI interviews for a number of research projects.
